Phrases and Stitches to Know

Phrases

  • Foundation Chain: The starting row of your crochet project, created by forming a chain with a slip knot.
  • Turn Your Work: Flip your project to crochet in the opposite direction. Turn away from you, keeping the working yarn on the far side.
  • Stacked Stitch/Stacked Single Crochet: After turning your work, sc into the top of the last stitch. Then, work an additional sc into the front loop of the sc you just completed.
  • Work in Back Loop Only (BLO): Insert your hook into the back loop of each stitch, leaving the front loop unworked to create a ribbed texture.
  • Leave a Long Tail: Reserve extra yarn at the end for sewing or weaving in.
  • Cinch Closure: Weave yarn through the top stitches of your project, then pull tight to close, like drawing a string bag.

Stitches

  • Single Crochet (sc): Insert your hook into the next stitch, yarn over, and pull through (two loops on hook). Yarn over again and pull through both loops.
  • Half Double Crochet (hdc): Yarn over, insert hook into the next stitch, yarn over and pull through (three loops on hook). Yarn over once more and pull through all three loops.
  • Slip Stitch (ss): Insert your hook into the next stitch, yarn over, and pull through both the stitch and loop on your hook.
  • Magic Ring (MR): Form a loop with your yarn, work the required number of stitches into it, then pull the yarn tail to tighten.

Small Pumpkin Pattern

Chain 29 – Turn your foundation chain. Work 1 sc in the 2nd chain from the hook. Work 1 sc in the next 3 chains. Work 1 hdc in the next 20 chains. Work 1 sc in the last 4 chains.

From now on, crochet in the Back Loop Only (BLO) to create that lovely ribbed texture.

Turn your work and sc into the top of the last stitch. Stack the stitch by working an additional sc into the front loop of the sc you just completed. Work 1 sc in the first 4 stitches, 1 hdc in the next 20 stitches, and 1 sc in the last 4 stitches.

Repeat this process until you have 28 rows total.

Assembly:

Once finished, leave a long tail (about 1 meter) for sewing. Sew the sides of the pumpkin together by holding the edges and sewing back and forth through each stitch. When you reach the top, tie a few knots with the yarn tail from your foundation chain. Weave the yarn through the top in a zig-zag pattern, pull gently to close, and secure the yarn by sewing this end closed.

Stuff with fiberfill to create a cozy, plump look—firm enough to hold its shape but still soft.

To close the bottom, push your needle through the cinch closure at the top, down through the pumpkin’s center. Sew in a zig-zag pattern, pulling stitches tightly to close the opening and form a round shape. Create dimples by pulling the yarn tight and repeating this process 2-3 times as desired.

Tie a knot and tuck the yarn tail into the center.

Stem:

  • MR: Work 8 sc into the ring. (8)
  • Rows 2-6: Work 1 sc in each stitch around. (8)
  • Row 7: Work 2 sc in each stitch around. Finish with 1 ss. (16)

Leave a long tail for assembly. Sew the stem onto the pumpkin.

Medium Pumpkin Pattern

Chain 29 – Turn your foundation chain. Work 1 sc in the 2nd chain from the hook. Work 1 sc in the next 3 chains. Work 1 hdc in the next 20 chains. Work 1 sc in the last 4 chains.

Turn your work and sc into the top of the last stitch. Stack the stitch by working an additional sc into the front loop of the sc you just completed. Work 1 sc in the first 4 stitches, 1 hdc in the next 20 stitches, and 1 sc in the last 4 stitches.

Repeat this process until you have 36 rows total.

Assembly:
